Transforming a Historic Edwardian Apartment

Conversion and Client Vision

In 2016, The Sloane Building underwent a major transformation, converting from an institutional space into a series of luxury residential apartments. One such unit - a three-bedroom apartment - was purchased by a client seeking to create a unique, open-plan home that emphasised space, light, and architectural integrity.

To bring this vision to life, the client enlisted the expertise of Golden Mean Design. The brief: convert the existing three-bedroom layout into a spacious one-bedroom residence that celebrates the building’s original features.

Design Approach

The project began with a complete strip-back of the apartment’s interior, revealing original architectural details hidden during the 2016 conversion. Among the rediscovered features were elegant archways and Art Deco flourishes, subtle yet significant nods to the building’s storied past. Golden Mean Design worked to preserve and accentuate these elements, seamlessly integrating them into the new interior.

Material Highlight

Throughout the main living spaces, the design team selected Havwoods
HW3372 Cabarita engineered wood flooring—a sophisticated choice that complements the building’s heritage character while offering modern durability and warmth. The flooring serves as a unifying element across the apartment, providing a tactile, elegant foundation for the contemporary-meets-classic interior aesthetic.
