The bowels of an imposing 1930s apartment block on the banks of the River Thames seem an unlikely spot for a Moroccan hammam, but this is precisely where you will find The Spa. Designed by The London Design Group, the decor is as exotic as the treatments and positively glows with jewel-like shades of amber, ruby and copper. With all that clay, steam and oil associated with deep cleansing, it is a tough location for a wood floor, which is why they turned to Havwoods for the aged Versailles panels and smoked oak planks.
In 1991 Eren Ali, a successful industrial designer bought a restaurant on a Bristol back street that had failed no fewer than seven times in the previous decade, and from here he launched the very first Las Iguanas. So what made this new venture such a success? Ali puts it down, not to the food, but to the design. Of course, this is a later incarnation, mixing three different woods on the floor in what had become something of a Las Iguanas signature style.
With lots of sunshine yellow blown glass hanging over the bar like delicate balloons, ebony-coloured leather banquettes and Havwoods’ smoked oak planks to grace the floor, little wonder that Time Out describes this deluxe brasserie as “a gorgeous place”. Its see-and-be-seen layout and choice central London location is clearly indicative of experience, so it comes as no surprise to learn that owners Luc and Julie van Oostende have a string of restaurants in Belgium, whilst Luc is also a founding member of cafe and bakery chain Le Pain Quotidien.
Las Iguanas is a successful casual dining restaurant chain with a Latin American theme. It was the first of its kind to specialise in upscale and authentic food from Brazil, Mexico and beyond, cooked from scratch, but in Las Iguanas the decor is as important as the food. Havwoods' legend has it that a pair of talented carpenters were presented with our Quadro, Arena and Blanco planks in this restaurant and told to create an interesting floor.
The Chester Fields, Cheshire (Sandfield Barn) This 400-year-old building has had a rich life. Formerly a dairy farm, it underwent a two-year transformation from derelict barn into the lavish restaurant seen here. Originally opened in 2008, it has now long been under different management, yet it still boasts the beautiful original walls and beams, as well as the stunning smoked oak Havwoods floor.
The Las Iguanas casual dining chain brings Latin American energy to our cool British shores, where any time is party time for the pre-family 24 - 35-year-olds with good disposable income who make up the chain’s core clientele. Design in this Kingston branch was entrusted to independent and branded hospitality specialists B3Designers, who specified the same trio of Havwoods’ Venture Plank products already used in a number of the South American eateries outlets.
