Amid the high-rises of Sydney’s CBD, Smart Design Studio took on the challenge of delivering daylight in the city through the clever restoration and transformation of a 9-storey heritage listed sandstone building into a light-filled, functional and award-winning workplace design.

Amid the high-rises of Sydney’s CBD, a remarkable transformation sits atop a 9-storey heritage-listed sandstone building. The award winning Bridge 17 by Smart Design Studio, is the epitome of functional workplace design.

Faced with the challenge of restoring a dilapidated structure, Smart Design Studio recognised the opportunity to fill the space with natural light and ventilation - a scarce commodity in a busy CBD.

Through the use of lightweight steel construction, to achieve an open-plan layout, and situating dark timber-lined utility spaces centrally, a light-filled workspace was created.

Perimeter balconies with expansive awninged sliding doors, not only offer breathtaking views of Sydney’s iconic skyline but also seamlessly connect the external and internal realms.

Soaring vaulted ceilings in pristine white set render, create an arresting contrast against the smoky grey flooring. Smart Design Studio and Calida worked with Havwoods to select Taize from the PurePanel range for the timber joinery and panelling throughout. This specification complimented the warm timber flooring – Fendi from Havwoods’ Venture Plank range.
