Some buildings are steeped in history, and need to be provided with a new lease of life in order to create an equally remarkable future.
The Jolly Sailor in Davenport was one such building. A sympathetic restoration of the iconic building, which is located in a protected conservation area, was needed to reignite its naval history and local narrative. Architect, DV8 Designs, has recently restored the much-loved public house to its former glory, with the new scheme focused around the pub’s nautical name.
The completed design reveals eclectic light fittings with a nautical twist, panelled walls and feature fireplaces in rich colours and an array of aged leathers on antique studded armchairs. The walls are adorned with aged photographs, diverse historical artefacts and the secret finds of ancient mariners.
The new Orangery extension adds a softer touch to the masculine scheme with roof lights that allow natural light to flood in over mustard and jade green velvet fabrics, intricate patterns and dark, floral wallpapers.
The public house itself had to be designed in such a way that the floor finishes used were durable and hard-wearing, yet still managing to create a rich and tactile interior scheme, which felt inviting and comfortable.
The Havwoods timber, from the ‘Henley’ and ‘Design from Havwoods’ collections, provides a warm feel and complements the heritage of the existing building. All the products were specified because they gave an immediate feeling of quality, both visually and to touch. The distinctive wood designs lend themselves to the rich and opulent nature of the overall scheme.
