A Thoughtful Transformation of a Classic New York Home
Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, this 900 sq ft pre-war co-op has been carefully reimagined by designer Kate Zharkova of Gallery KBNY. Completed over eight months, the renovation balances the architectural charm of the original apartment with a refined, modern sensibility tailored to the homeowner’s lifestyle.
Designing for Continuity and Calm
A key objective of this project managed by Gallery KBNY was to create a seamless visual flow across the home’s entry, living, dining, and bedroom spaces. The design introduces a soft, cohesive palette that enhances natural light while maintaining the intimacy expected of a pre-war residence.
Custom millwork plays a central role, particularly in the living area where built-in seating and storage frame expansive windows and draw attention to the surrounding cityscape. Subtle detailing and carefully chosen materials ensure that each intervention feels integrated rather than imposed.
"Creating continuity throughout the home was central to the design, expressed through layered tones of deep blue and charcoal gray that flow from room to room. Every finish was intentional, from the nuanced textured wallpaper and fireplace marble to the wood flooring, with millwork custom-stained to create a seamless composition" - Kate Zharkova, Gallery KBNY.

Flooring as the Foundation
Presto 1-Strip Plank (HW16441P) from the Italian Collection was selected to unify the interiors. Finished in the Platinum color group, the flooring introduces a gentle warmth that complements both the architectural envelope and the bespoke joinery.
Installed throughout the apartment, the planks provide continuity between rooms, allowing the space to feel larger and more connected. The floor finish was intentionally matched to the millwork tone, creating a harmonious dialogue between vertical and horizontal surfaces.
Beyond aesthetics, Presto offers durability suited to daily city living. As a PEFC™ Certified product (PEFC/16-37-1417), it also supports responsible sourcing, aligning with the project’s considered approach to materials.
Honoring Pre-War Character
Original proportions, ceiling details, and window placements have been preserved and enhanced. Clean-lined furnishings and restrained finishes allow these historic elements to remain prominent while introducing a fresh, contemporary layer.
The result is a home that feels both timeless and current. It reflects the character of Greenwich Village while meeting the needs of modern urban life.
