Nestled among towering evergreens in Portland's Washington Park, the Cultural Village at Portland Japanese Garden is a masterclass in material harmony. Designed by internationally renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the project embodies his belief that buildings should emerge naturally from their surroundings, creating a seamless dialogue between architecture, landscape, and culture.

Architecture Rooted in Place

A celebration of natural materials

Throughout the Cultural Village, a restrained palette of wood, glass, steel, and natural light creates an atmosphere of quiet sophistication. The building's intricate timber screens, soaring wood-lined ceilings, and carefully crafted architectural details showcase the beauty of natural materials while reinforcing the principles of Japanese design.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames views of the surrounding woodland, drawing the landscape deep into the interior spaces. The changing light throughout the day further enhances the warmth and texture of the materials, creating a dynamic yet calming visitor experience.

Rift & Quarter: A foundation for standout design

Featured throughout the interior spaces is Rift & Quarter (HW9207) from our Venture Plank Collection. Selected for its clean grain structure and subtle character, the flooring provides a refined foundation for Kuma's architectural vision.

The soft, natural tones of the oak complement the extensive use of hardwood throughout the building, from the vertical slatted screens and bespoke joinery to the dramatic ceiling structures that define many of the interior spaces. The flooring's understated appearance allows the architecture to remain the focal point while introducing warmth, texture, and continuity throughout the Cultural Village.

Spaces designed for reflection and connection

Flooded with natural light, the interiors are characterised by openness, simplicity, and carefully considered proportions. Whether in communal gathering spaces, educational rooms, galleries, or circulation areas, the flooring creates a cohesive visual thread that unites the building's diverse functions.

Large expanses of glazing frame uninterrupted views of the forest beyond, while the pale oak flooring draws those natural surroundings indoors. Together, these elements foster an atmosphere of calm and contemplation that reflects the Portland Japanese Garden's mission to inspire harmony and peace.

A lasting expression of craftsmanship

The Cultural Village stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful architecture and material selection. Every element has been carefully considered to create a building that feels deeply connected to its setting while honouring traditional Japanese values of craftsmanship and simplicity.

Through Kengo Kuma's visionary design and the natural beauty of Rift & Quarter (HW9207), the Cultural Village offers visitors an immersive experience where architecture, culture, and nature exist in perfect balance.
