An Elevated Expression of Modern Minimalism in the High Desert.

Set against the dramatic landscape of Central Oregon, the Tetherow Residence is an extraordinary example of understated excellence. Designed by award-winning firm Hacker Architects and constructed by KN Builders, this home captures the seamless balance between architectural precision and natural beauty.

The design brief called for one continuous wood surface to flow effortlessly from floors to walls to ceilings, creating a cohesive aesthetic defined by warmth and restraint. To achieve the desired look, the architects required planks with no bevels at the edges, allowing for a flawless finish-in-place installation.

Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing, extending below the floor level and above the ceiling line, presented both a design statement and a technical challenge. The chosen wood needed to be exceptionally stable and versatile enough to accommodate custom detailing, including air duct louvers cut directly into the planks.

For this project, Castle Grande (ZZZ1007) from the Castle Bespoke collection was the ideal choice. Its long lengths, clean grain, and natural tonal consistency provided the perfect foundation for the home’s open, light-filled architecture. Finished in place by the flooring and painting contractors, the result is a serene, contemporary space where craftsmanship and material honesty take centre stage.

The Tetherow Residence stands as a powerful example of how natural wood can transform modern architecture, enhancing the connection between design and nature through simplicity, precision, and timeless elegance.
