This Victorian family home in Highbury, London has been thoughtfully reimagined by SVML London to balance contemporary Danish-inspired design with its original architectural character. Featuring Holme HW2069 from the PurePlank range, the scheme uses light, honey-toned timber flooring to unify the key living areas on the ground floor, enhance natural light, and introduce warmth throughout the interior.

Light, warmth and a Danish influence in Highbury

Reworking and restyling the living areas

Set on a tree-lined street in Highbury, this elegant Victorian home retains a wealth of original detailing, from ornate cornices and ceiling roses to stained glass windows. The design brief centred on creating a functional family home that could accommodate all ages, while introducing a refined, stylish aesthetic inspired by Danish interiors.

The ground floor of the house originally had three rooms at the back; a study, kitchen and dining room and then a separate, closed off sitting room. The brief was to open this area up to create a large kitchen/dining area making it a light and open space.

The perfect nod to a Danish feel

HW2069 Holme from the PurePlank range was selected in a matt lacquered finish and used in the Kitchen, on the 'big man steps' which was the staircase between the kitchen and sitting room and the sitting room.

‘It’s a beautiful long, wide plank, in a honey colour which lightens all the areas and is smooth under foot” says Sophie Mackay-Lewis from SVML London. ‘The product was the perfect nod to a Danish feel within the interior design of the house, creating the Hygge that we were after! It looked fantastic against the dark colour of the kitchen units as well as the dark green of the sitting room.’

On the staircase connecting the kitchen and sitting room. Custom nosing and a shift in plank orientation - laid horizontally across the steps - introduce a subtle yet distinctive design moment, reinforcing the sense of flow between spaces.’

“It has to be said that the floor is a star statement of the project as it just sits so beautifully in the space.”
