Green space is one of the most sought after commodities in London, so the new Wardian development in Canary Wharf will bring the green indoors.
A Wardian case was an early glass container, designed by a 19th Century London explorer and botanist for growing or transporting plants on long sea voyages, so, not surprisingly, the development is defined by all things green and growing. Indeed, it will be spectacularly full of foliage from around the world, from sunken gardens outside the lobby to exotic plants in the rooftop bar; even the open air swimming pool will be set in a flourishing tropical environment, whilst giant glass cages reminiscent of the botanical palm houses in the great collecting gardens like Kew form sanctuaries throughout the development.
The two modernist-influenced towers designed by Glenn Howells Architects, one of 50 storeys, the other 55, are at the same time striking and simple, their slender footprint distinguished by wrap around balconies on every floor to give every single one of the 624 apartments its own “sky garden” of generous proportions. These are overlooked by floor to ceiling windows, providing enhanced light and a greater sense of space.
Not surprisingly, given the natural ethos of the towers, the fit out specifications feature marble, wood and glass to stunning effect. The specification for the flooring to halls, kitchens and living areas was for a smoked oak, originally a mosaic but later changed to a plank, and the shade was critical. Oak Chateau, a 180mm wide plank with a smoked, brushed and wax oiled, select grade European oak lamella has been specified throughout both towers.
