Forest Lodge, New Forest

The brief delivered to Pad Studio for this stunning five acre plot in New Forest was to create a low energy dwelling built to comply with the Caravan Act 1968; spaces flooded with light and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape were key to the design vision. Crucially, and understandably since their clients had been living on the site in a static caravan for 15 years, the new dwelling was not to resemble or feel like a mobile home in any way.

The overall approach was considered. Time was spent visiting the site at various times in order to truly understand the changing light and views. The solution is a home that draws from the physical location by inviting nature inside with large, carefully placed windows to focus and frame the views.

Inside, the material palette is restrained and natural with oak, limestone and white panelled walls deliberately muted to provide a backdrop painted by the forest’s changing light and rendered by the colour of the landscape. From the beginning, white wood was called for on both the floors and ceiling. Havwoods' first suggestion was Venture Plank Blanco, in 20mm and 12mm thickness respectively, and both the designers and their client liked the idea of using an identical finish for both areas. We also suggested an Osmo product to finish the ceiling recesses by the windows to create that coherent aesthetic.
