5 Chevron Interior Design Trends & Ideas

19 Oct 2021

Chevron is one of the most popular patterns in home design. From throw pillows to bedding, flooring to wall cladding, it's fun and playful but also sophisticated and timeless enough for any room in your house.

We've compiled some chevron interior design trends and ideas to get you started on this contemporary pattern.

What Is Chevron?

Chevron flooring is a decorative design made up of angled cross-hatching. This type of pattern creates the illusion of depth and dimension, which can be used to make an ordinary room look like it's expanding in size. Chevron flooring has been popular for years due to its versatility, durability, and affordability.

Isn’t Chevron and Herringbone the same?

Although Herringbone and Chevron are two styles of parquetry, they are in fact very different flooring designs.

Chevron and Herringbone patterns are often confused with one another, but they have different origins and provide a distinct look. While both Chevron and Herringbone designs create a sense of balance, the two differ in their orientation.

Chevrons run horizontally while herrings move diagonally. The two also employ different shapes: chevrons use triangles while herrings use parallelograms, which affects how much space is taken up on a surface.

Designers generally can’t agree whether Herringbone flooring is a modification of Chevron, or if Chevron is modified Herringbone. The real difference between the two designs is how they’re laid and installed. Chevron is formed by cutting the wooden boards at an angle on the short end, rather than laying complete planks as is the case with Herringbone floors.

1. A step in the right direction

The Chevron pattern is one of the most popular flooring styles in use today. The earliest examples come from Ancient Greece, but the trend borrows heavily from French designs and influences for its richly-detailed carpets with chevron patterns - known officially by some architects simply as "Chevron" or "Parquet".

Its popularity grew alongside herringbone-style parquetry during medieval times when it became requisite furnishings, reserved for the upper classes and royalty.

Whether you’re looking to create a sense of summer all year round, seeking a way to bring the beach home or just want a timeless flooring option in your home, you can’t go wrong with Chevron flooring.

2. Fashion Forward

It has been said that the chevron pattern is synonymous with fashion label Missoni after they debuted the style in their 1953 show, and the rest is history.

Chevron is a popular pattern for clothing. It has been seen on everything from dresses to shoes and can be worn in many different ways. There are many chevron patterns that vary in colours and widths, which means that you can mix and match your clothes with this design to create new outfits.

3. Time for textiles

It's not a secret that fashion is all the rage in home décor these days. The chevron pattern has been seen everywhere from bedding to wall paint, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. If you're looking for a way to add some flair to your decorating style with minimal effort, then you should consider using this trendy textile as a focal point of your space.

You can add a subtle homage to the pattern by scattering some cushions on your lounge, like these from Etsy, or make a bold statement to your room with one of these gorgeous rugs from Temple & Webster. Whatever your choice, using soft furnishings is a great way to experiment with the pattern without committing to a permanent change.

4. If these walls could talk

Wall cladding is a great way to add value and texture to your home. Whether you are looking for modern, classic or timeless design elements, chevron wall cladding can be a perfect choice. Use it as a focal point in your bedroom or living room.

5. Have a green thumb?

Many people love the look of chevron patterns, but have you ever considered using it in your garden? By placing a planter box with a chevron pattern on it in your garden, you can add some flair without taking up too much space.

If you love a bit of DIY, you’ll be sure to get some inspiration from Angela Marie Made’s chevron planter or for those who are more into click and deliver or low-maintenance gardening, you can opt for a ceramic chevron planter, like this one from Sagebrook Home.
